WOOD YOU LIKE WOOD

LeavesWood the hard, tough substance that forms the trunks of trees has been used for thousands of years as a fuel and as a material for construction.

Woods are classified as softwood or hardwood, depending on the tree from which they come. Wood from broad-leaved trees are called hardwoods, and woods from coniferous trees are called softwoods, regardless of their actual hardness. Thus many softwoods are actually harder than some of the so-called hardwoods.

Wood You Like Woods

Wood You Like WoodsWood You Like Wood is naturally a very durable substance. If not attacked by living organisms, it will last for hundreds or even thousands of years. Walnut, redwood, cedar, mahogany and teak are among the well-known woods that are extremely durable.

Freshly-cut wood contains considerable water, which amounts to from one-third to more than one-half of the total weight. The drying of wood before it is processed into timber is called seasoning. Wood may be seasoned either by air-drying or kiln-drying.

We at Wood You Like air-dry our wood and then kiln-dry it in our own kiln so that we can be sure it has the correct moisture content. The main woods we use are Ash and Beech for the toys and names, and Walnut and Yew for our three-dimensional puzzles.

The Ash Tree

Ash TreeAsh is the commonest tree in Irish hedgerows, and is also a traditional woodland species.

Ash woods are found in the Burren, Co Clare, and Hanging Rock in South Fermanagh.

Ash is one of the last trees to come into leaf and is one of the first to lose its leaves in Autumn.

The pale dense timber makes good firewood and is also used for hurley sticks, snooker cues and furniture.

The Beech Tree

Beech Tree

The Beech Tree grows only on freely draining soils.

It needs abundant water and can send its roots far and deep to find it.

The crown is so efficient at trapping light that it can grow up under other trees, but none can grow under the beech.

The timber is strong and hard-wearing, and is suitable for furniture and stairs.

The Walnut Tree

Walnut Tree The Walnut Tree has edible nuts and high quality timber.

The timber of the Common Walnut is very stable which makes it valuable for gun-stocks.

It also takes a very high polish which makes it very suitable for high quality furniture.

It also means that it is usually a very expensive timber.
